My Ántonia
By: Willa Sibert Cather
This is the second Large Print Book Company edition of this title, with revised format for improved legibility. First published in 1918, My Ántonia is one of three novels by Willa Cather collectively known as the Great Plains Trilogy, including O Pioneers! (1913) and Song of the Lark (1915), also available from The Large Print Book Company. Through the character of Ántonia Shimerda, as remembered by her friend Jim, we experience 1880s Nebraska in all its seasons, the hardscrabble farm life contrasted with rural town living, the dogged determination, sense of satisfaction, and richness of success that comes with putting everything one has and all that one is into achieving the American Dream.
Title information
Orphan Jim Burden goes to live with his grandparents in Black Hawk, Nebraska and meets the Shimerdas, a Bohemian (Czech Republic) family traveling in the same coach. Unfortunately the family falls into bad living circumstances which Jim's grandparents try to alleviate in spite of the language barrier between them. Jim teaches Ántonia how to speak English and they form a bond that lasts into adulthood. Ántonia is a hard worker devoted to her family, and her story is contrasted with that of Jim's other female friend, Lena Lingard, who flees the farm life at her first opportunity for a career in Lincoln. This is a hauntingly crafted tale set against the wild beauty of Nebraska.
