Sarah Orne Jewett
Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1909) was born and lived most of her life in South Berwick, Maine, the daughter of a country doctor. She is best known for her keenly-observed stories about the people around her, their patterns of speech, their manners and inner lives in Deephaven and other story collections and in her masterpiece, The Country of the Pointed Firs.
