Lord Jim

Jim, a British seaman, is a member of a crew that abandons a ship full of pilgrims heading for Mecca. Though his decision to leave the ship is conflicted, he is publicly censured for this action. The novel follows his attempts to come to terms with himself, moving from port to port, until he is sent by a benefactor to manage a remote outpost in the Western Pacific. There his good works lead the natives to call him Lord Jim and he finds peace–until he is once again challenged by fate to accept his role and take a stand.
