What Katy Did is an 1872 children’s book by Sarah Chauncey Woolsey under her pen name Susan Coolidge. It follows the adventures of a twelve-year-old girl, Katy Carr, and her family who live in the fictional lakeside Ohio town of Burnet in the 1860s. Katy is a tall, untidy tomboy, forever getting into scrapes but wishing to be beautiful and beloved. Two TV movies have been based on What Katy Did. The 1999 film starred Alison Pill as Katy, with Megan Follows as Cousin Helen.

Susan Coolidge
Susan Coolidge is the pen name of Sarah Chauncey Woolsey (1835–1905). Born in Cleveland, she spent much of her childhood in New Haven, Connecticut. Woolsey served as a nurse during the Civil War, after which she started to write. She is best known for her classic children’s novel What Katy Did (1872).
