Sense and Sensibility

Sense and Sensibility was the first of Jane Austen’s novels to be published, in 1811. It contrasts the personalities of two sisters, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, the former being sensible and considerate of circumstances and others and the latter romantic and more self-expressive. In the end both find acceptable husbands but not before a series of twists of fortune and (in Marianne’s case) disappointment in her first love.
