Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was an unsuccessful doctor who wrote stories to fill time between infrequent patients. He created Sherlock Holmes in 1887 and went on to write four novels and 56 stories featuring the ingenious detective and his biographer companion Dr. John Watson.
